Summer fly by

Good grief. Is summer over already?

We've had a fun three months of entertaining friends and family and have squeezed in a few quick trips of our own. Since we lag at getting posts up we're gonna cover all the events in brief now!

1. Visit from Mom and Pops Bauer!
What a treat this was! They were gracious not to complain about their cramped living quarters in our apartment and it was a trip of both business and pleasure...some house hunting, finance discussion and plenty of exploring and outdoor time.

Urban kayaking in the new boat. (Another sweeeeet garage sale find by the Bauers.)
Setting out for Chasm Lake, beneath Long' s Peak
Logging some miles above 10,000 feet to ready Mom for her Peru trip
Fuschia pinecones, a first for me
A steep, slippery, (scary) snow field kept us from reaching the lake, but we got close!

2. Olufs' Santa Barbara Wedding
As someone who is perpetually looking forward to the next trip to California's central coastline, I was ecstatic that Tom and Olga invited us to their wedding. The whole thing was gorgeous, with a bluff-top ceremony overlooking the Pacific and an outdoor reception in town. Congrats to the happy couple!
While in the southland we also had a brief visit with the Conrad fam, packed with a trip to the beach, a Galaxy soccer game and plenty of pool time...

3. Carl Goes North
After the wedding C flew up to Gig Harbor for a week to trim trees, ride bikes, swim in the lake and eat some good ol' home cookin'. C here, Dad and I whipped out the monster ladder for this job. The branches of this maple were hanging down over the end of the driveway. Much to the animadversion of Mom, who thought they made a nice blind for some of Dad's "treasures," we made the following dent in the canopy.
The next three pictures are from the John Wayne Trail up near Snoqualmie Pass. The trail is an old railroad grade so it makes for some lazy pedalling. There were two highlights to this trip, the first being our McGyver-like patchjob of a bike tube blowout 10 miles into the trip. With the vulcanizing fluid dried up and gone from the patchkit, we ended up having to melt the patch to the tube with a cigarette lighter, then place a soft glasses case just inside the worn-through tire (the cause of the flat). Ten miles of walking a bike would have been hell, so it was a do or die situation. Anyway, it worked, so we pressed on. Here's one of the many bridge crossings on the way...Here we are at the beginning of the Snoqualmie Tunnel, the second highlight of the trip. The tunnel is 2 miles long and pitch black. We brought flashlights which only helped halfway through when our eyes finally adjusted. Until then, it was a lot of almost crashing into the walls.Fun trip. Thanks mom and pop.

4. Mystics in Sedona
A big thanks to Grandma and Grandpa Blum who once again invited the gang out to their time share at Los Abrigados in Sedona, AZ. Red rock country never fails to awe and humble us lowly hikers. Just beautiful.
At the saddle, Cathedral Rock hike

5. Bear Peak Night Hike
Bear Peak is one of the peaks above the Flatirons.
Can you see the lovely city lights of Boulder behind us? We can too!It rained on the way down.Let the powder days begin!

As an addendum to the kayaking section, my friend Adam Light and I taught ourselves how to eskimo roll this week at a friend's swimming pool. Maybe I'll get some pics or a vid up here if the weather cooperates this weekend. Later!

Light/Kidder Wedding

It's wedding season! In mid-June we flew to our first wedding of the summer, held at Turkey Run State Park in Indiana. Kate and Adam put on a good show in a beautiful park with tons of great activities, including game night, swimming and hiking!

It had been raining and flooding pretty significantly all over the mid-west the week prior to our arrival (you may remember the extensive news coverage), but we only started worrying about our plan to camp when, descending into a stormy Indianapolis, we got aerial views of heavily waterlogged fields. When we met up with Adam he assured us that the current storm would blow through, but that a major bridge to the park had been washed out. Luckily, the storm ran its course that day and the park stayed mostly dry (besides some standing water and some pretty wicked trail mud) for the rest of the weekend.

On with the show! Carl and I crossing the mighty Sugar Creek to our first day of exploring
The Saturday hiking crew
Some goons in the inn's basement arcade after an evening of group games and good company
The big day!
Jason, Unitarian minister, beneath the chuppah.
They did.We got out again after the reception for another hike around the park

Paul and Heidi Visit

They flew in to DIA without a hitch Friday night and took up residence on our brand-spankin' futon. The first order of business on Saturday was a backcountry ski trip to Rocky Mountain National Park's Flattop Mtn. After a few miles, we (minus Tory, who was working) broke treeline onto a lovely patch of snow...
...then lost it, which forced us to go boulder-bounding. Not fun in ski/snowboard boots. Like a good boy, Paul hauled Heidi's skis up the rough parts.
We finally got to the top of a suitable slope at ~2pm, and the snow was getting a bit wet. Paul thrashing some slush for one very impressed onlooker (a.k.a. Heidi).
Heidi shreddin'.
Overall, not a bad trip. The snow conditions weren't the best because of our late start, but the views were of course top notch. Here's a shot of some of the peakier peaks we saw on our journey (behind sherpa Paul).
And glad to be back at the car.We spent Sunday touring around Boulder on bikes. P and C, wishing they were in kayaks charging down Boulder Creek.
P and H on the 11th floor of the Gamow Tower on the CU campus, where Carl works and where he occasionally dishes out hefty Sunday morning physics lectures...lucky us! (Paul seemed to have followed it, actually...)
Next it was on to Centennial Park at the west end of Pearl St., where we hiked a short trail and scrambled on rocks at the top.
Tory, hanging on tight and enjoying the view
Carl, braced against the gusty winds at the top of the red rocksPaul on the edge (of reason).Group shot! You should be scared because it drops a good 100ft. behind us.
Monday morning, Paul and Carl did a mountain bike ride at Hall Ranch near Lyons, CO. Thanks to Scott Knappmiller for letting us borrow some wheels! We also should mention all the gourmet meals we enjoyed during their visit. Saturday night, they revealed to us the magic of mini pizzas on corn tortillas. Nothing better. Sunday night was our turn with a shrimp asparagus pasta dish. And Monday topped it off with a greasy whole chicken and insalata caprese. The happy group in our sweltering apartment (we're too cheap to turn the A/C on, plus it uses so much energy, bleeeah!).Hey, let's do this again sometime guys!

We drove back from San Diego Saturday night and geared up for a day of soccer games on Sunday, where both girls dazzled us with their skills.
Phoebe rocked two games that day:

Spring Delights

The weather is -finally- warming up here a bit and we have kicked off the season with daily rides on our new Wave Board!! Thanks Mom and Dad Conrad!
This is on the path in the park behind our apartment, which can be seen on the left side of the picture...Also, Pearl Street in downtown Boulder is in bloom with thousands of colorful tulips. Here is a glimpse:
More Spring pics to come soon!
